West Michigan Beach Towns

The west coast of Michigan, often referred to as the "Gold Coast," boasts some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the United States. With stunning sunsets over Lake Michigan, crystal-clear waters, and charming coastal towns, this area is a must-visit, and in my opinion the most underrated beaches in America.

We flew into Chicago Midway Airport, and the drive time was about 1.5 hours to St. Joseph. We were excited to explore the beach towns along Lake Michigan.

Notable events include the South Haven Blueberry Festival, Harborfest, and the South Haven Jazz Festival. South Haven is often referred to as the “Blueberry Capital of the World”.

Saugatuck

Saugatuck is so charming that I felt like I walked into a postcard! This is one of my favorite Lake Michigan Beach towns.

Downtown Saugatuck: Stroll through the streets with art galleries, boutique shops, and specialty stores. You'll find everything from local artwork and crafts to unique souvenirs. The town also has a variety of restaurants, cafes, and ice cream shops. Charlie’s Ice Cream was delicious!

Holland

Holland is known for its Dutch heritage, beautiful tulip displays, and charming downtown area. Whether you're visiting during the famous Tulip Time Festival or exploring the scenic landscapes, there's plenty to see and do in Holland. The Tulip Time Festival is Holland's signature event, held every spring to celebrate the city's Dutch heritage and the blooming of millions of tulips. The festival features parades, traditional Dutch dancing, art shows, and concerts. It's a celebration that attracts visitors from all over the country.

Stroll Through Downtown Holland: Downtown Holland is a charming area with a mix of boutique shops, restaurants, and galleries. The downtown has heated sidewalks, making it comfortable even in winter. You'll find unique shops selling everything from clothing and gifts to local crafts and Dutch imports.

Downtown Holland, has embraced a whimsical theme inspired by the classic story "The Wizard of Oz." Author L. Frank Baum spent summers vacationing at Macatawa Park on the shores of Lake Michigan. It was this area that inspired Baum to write this classic story.

A little girl named Dorothy lived two doors down from him, and a yellow brick was manufactured in Holland years ago. There is also a castle in Holland that inspired his vision for the royal Castle.

The "Wizard of Oz Walk," is designed to add a magical atmosphere to the city's downtown. Throughout downtown Holland, you'll find characters from "The Wizard of Oz," such as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wicked Witch.

We enjoyed walking the Yellow Brick Road, the magical world of Oz brings an extra layer of charm to this already vibrant city.

Windmill Island Gardens: Windmill Island Gardens is a must-visit attraction in Holland, featuring the authentic Dutch windmill, De Zwaan. This 250-year-old windmill is the only working Dutch windmill in the United States and is still used to grind flour. The gardens are gorgeous in the spring when thousands of tulips bloom. The park also features a carousel, Dutch-themed shops, gardens, and a miniature Little Netherlands Village display made by early settlers.

Big Red Lighthouse

Holland State Park and Big Red Lighthouse: Holland State Park is one of the most popular destinations in the area, known for its beautiful sandy beaches and stunning views of Lake Michigan. The park is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. A highlight of the park is the Big Red Lighthouse, an iconic symbol of Holland.
